Watch Kamala Harris and Samantha Bee Discuss Coronavirus, Systemic Racism and the VP Race

California Senator Kamala Harris has been on many people’s minds lately as the discussion over who presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden will choose as his vice president heats up. On Monday, she sat down with Full Frontal‘s Samantha Bee—in socially distanced fashion, of course—to address the rumors directly. (Sort of.)

“I know that running for vice president must be a very full schedule for you,” Bee joked, to which Harris laughed and replied, “Oh, Samantha. Honestly, seriously? My head is so not there.” Sure, Senator Harris. Watch the full clip—which includes a discussion of systemic racism, voting rights, and what Harris called “the failure of leadership out of the White House” in dealing with the coronavirus pandemic—below.

“The nation should be able to rely on the president to speak truth and embrace science, but you have Donald Trump, who downplays the virus, who wants to place blame on others, who is trying to muzzle the experts, and who is slow to act and inconsistent,” opined Harris, not pulling any punches.

Bee told Vogue that Senator Harris the right person to speak to our currently troubled times: “Well, for one thing, we urgently need to hear voices of competence right now. We also need to know that we still have people working within the government who actually understand the stakes, and who are working tirelessly not just to address immediate concerns (looking at you, masks!) but also to understand long-term solutions.”

“Senator Harris speaks to our soul with authority, and demonstrates that the only way we can defeat COVID-19 and the ugliness it has brought is by resolutely fighting structural racism once and for all,” Bee said, adding, “She speaks with heart, candor, and honestly, a background of beautiful throw pillows. Full respect.”
