SAG Awards 2021: ‘Da 5 Bloods’ and ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ Lead Film Nominations and Michaela Coel Gets a Nod

In the best supporting actor category, besides Boseman, the nominees are Sacha Baron Cohen (The Trial of the Chicago 7); Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah); Jared Leto (The Little Things) and Leslie Odom, Jr. (One Night in Miami). Up for supporting actress are Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm); Glenn Close (Hillbilly Elegy); Olivia Colman (The Father); Youn Yuh-Jung (Minari) and Helena Zengel (News of the World). One surprise: No nomination for Amanda Seyfried for her critically acclaimed role as Marion Davies in Mank.

In recent years, the SAGs have been a very reliable predictor of the Oscar race. Last year, although Bombshell, The Irishman and  Once Upon a Time in Hollywood went into the night with the most nominations, Parasite walked out with the top award, the first foreign language film ever to do so. It went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture three weeks later. Meanwhile, all four of the acting winners were repeated at the Oscars: Renee Zellweger for best actress (Judy), Joaquin Phoenix for best actor (Joker), Brad Pitt for best supporting actor (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Laura Dern for best supporting actress (Marriage Story).

In the television categories, The Crown led all drama shows with five nominations, and Schitt’s Creek did the same for comedies—also with five nominations—including ones for all four of its lead actors: Eugene Levy, Dan Levy, Catherine O’Hara, and Annie Murphy. “I cried my eyes out at the last episode,” Collins said when the Schitt’s Creek nominations were read out. “I did not want that show to end.”

And in somewhat of a symbolic rebuke of the Golden Globes, Michaela Coel got a best actress nominations for her groundbreaking HBO project I May Destroy You, a day after being completely shut out of the Globes. In the category of outstanding performance by a female actor in a television movie or miniseries, Cole is up against Cate Blanchett (Mrs. America); Nicole Kidman (The Undoing) Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit), and Kerry Washington (Little Fires Everywhere).

After being delayed twice by the pandemic, the SAG ceremony will be held on April 4. You can find the full list of nominees here.
