Why The Removable Collar is The One Accessory You Never Knew You Needed

Your neckline says a lot about your style. For example, those who favor something low-cut may indeed be a little bit spicier than someone who subscribes to a Victorian-inspired sartorial agenda. Then, of course, there are a plethora of in-betweens, like those who love a polo shirt or a pretty Peter Pan collar (both of which they may or may not button up all the way). Many are getting rid of necklines entirely and opting for a bra top a la Katie Holmes in Khaite or Kaia Gerber in Loewe spring 2020. The point of focusing on one’s clavicle region is that lately, collars have become a big talking point in fashion. Polos had a moment on the spring runways too, and celebrity men like Harry Styles have been experimenting with statement necklines and pussy-bow blouses during the last couple of months.

This season it’s clear that the collar craze is picking up steam. Statement collars are everywhere—just look at the doily collars at the Gucci show or the ruffled collars at Alberta Ferretti today—but so too are those that you can remove and style at your whim. Detachable collars have popped up on the runway at JW Anderson by way of a pompom-esque cellophane version, as well as a denim tie collar at Ganni and a beaded bib number at Erdem. The humble Dickey has become a hit here in the Vogue offices too. In fact Senior Fashion New Writer Emily Farra has become a fan of the removable statement collar, explaining that she “was more excited about my lace Sea collar than any piece of clothing I’ve acquired in recent memory—and it’s not even really clothing!” She adds, “it felt like a real solution to my late-winter wardrobe slump. You can layer it over the same boring sweater you’ve been wearing all season, and suddenly you have a brand-new outfit. It’s a genius way to get more mileage out of your wardrobe without going on an unnecessary shopping spree.”

The detachable collar allows for more experimentation too, especially if you’re someone who always tends to gravitate towards one single kind of neckline. The polo shirts and Victorian high neck blouses will always be there, so will the low-cut numbers. But this year perhaps it’s time to buy into a new kind of accessory, one that isn’t an It bag or shoe but one that can help you craft a million and one different looks with clothes that you already own and love. So, will 2020 be the year of the collar? All necklines are pointing to yes.

Below, here are a few new detachable collars to shop now before the trend totally takes off, and everyone goes for bold up top.
