Why This Celebrity-Approved Facial Tool Is My Self-Care Must-Have

With much of the country staying indoors, DIY beauty routines and mood-boosting rituals have taken center stage. And while I’ll admit self-care is practically embedded in my DNA as a beauty editor, these days I’ve been hunting for creative ways to mimic the glowing effects of an hour-long session with my favorite facialist, testing out some hard-working beauty tools that help lift, firm, and sculpt along the way.

My recent favorite is a celebrity-approved roller created by Los Angeles skin pro and registered nurse Jamie Sherrill, known colloquially to her thousands of Instagram followers and A-list clients as simply, Nurse Jamie. After I witnessed dozens of leading ladies roll their way to firmer skin while on set for Vogue’s Beauty Secrets series (think Jessica Alba and Camila Mendes), I was intrigued. “It does really wake up your skin,” Hilary Duff explained in her vid, mentioning the tool’s abilities to roll out those pesky pillowcase creases on the skin. I had to try it out—and now seemed like the opportune time.

I began my lifting journey with some advice from the nurse herself. “You just press and roll,” Sherill explains of the UpLift device, created to mirror the massage techniques used in her signature facials. And while similar tools exist on the market, this creation, according to the pro, is the “only roller designed with percussive shiatsu massaging techniques in mind.”

Over the last few weeks, I’ve started my at-home day with my regular skincare routine. After a hyaluronic serum, a Vitamin C serum, and a moisturizer (but before SPF and eye cream) I pass the wand over my face. Beginning at my jawline and moving outwards toward my ear to promote proper lymphatic drainage, I then gently roll the tool up to my forehead and continue on the other side. Lastly, I work the tool up and down my neck—an often overlooked but important spot! While Sherill recommends using the tool for three minutes on each side, she is the first to admit that sometimes “real life” gets in the way of the full routine and less time spent rolling is completely fine. For me, the whole process takes less than five minutes. Beyond the mini miracle worker’s lifting and sculpting capabilities, I love that it helps physically push my skincare products into my skin—plus, it feels like a steal at just under $70.

In addition to fighting gravity, de-puffing and circulating blood flow to the face, the treatment gives me a chance to press the reset button first thing—call it my kind of mindful meditation. I wouldn’t consider myself the zen type, but spending a few minutes without my iPhone before the day officially sets in acts as a wonderful reminder that during these unprecedented times, taking care of ourselves shouldn’t be an afterthought.

Consider your weekend plans decided.
