You Can Now Watch ‘The First Monday in May’ for a Good Cause

Today, Vogue celebrated Met galas past in an intimate event that included a live performance from Florence and the Machine and a Virgil Abloh DJ set—but if you’re craving a deep dive into the action, fashion, and history of the Met gala, you’re not alone.

Luckily, the perfect film exists for that purpose—the 2016 documentary The First Monday in May, distributed by Magnolia Pictures, which chronicles Vogue and the Costume Institute’s work to put together the biggest night in fashion and art, focusing on the 2015 exhibition “China: Through the Looking Glass.” (Yes, that’s the Met gala at which Rihanna wore that iconic yellow Guo Pei gown.)

As an added incentive to revisit the event’s recent past, Magnolia Pictures has decided to donate May’s net proceeds of sales and rentals to the Met as well as to A Common ThreadVogue and the CFDA’s joint initiative to help those in the fashion industry affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

“During these uncertain times of COVID-19 when we all feel somewhat helpless, I wanted to be part of something that will help sustain the industry that has given me, and the world, so much: the fashion industry. That’s why, when I learned about A Common Thread and its effort to provide relief to those hit the hardest, I Immediately decided I wanted to donate the proceeds of the film during the month of May,” said Fabiola Beracasa, one of the documentary’s producers.
