24 Hours With Sabrina Carpenter, From the Studio to Her (Drive-In) Movie Premiere

Think Sabrina Carpenter’s schedule has slowed down recently? Think again. Last month, Vogue spent 24 hours with the singer-actor in California for a brand new video, where she split her time between the recording studio and getting ready for a (drive-in) movie premiere.

Carpenter’s jam-packed day began with a late wake-up call. She arose at 10 a.m., an hour later than she was supposed to. Once awake, she performed her skin-care routine, then drove herself over to a recording studio. Learning to drive has been a new endeavor for Carpenter. “I’ve been booked and busy, and haven’t had much time,” she says. “[Because of the pandemic] I’ve been able to renew my permit and start to practice driving again, so I can be somewhat of a normal human being.”

Once at the studio, Carpenter played around on the piano for a brief songwriting session. “We sit in a room, bang on instruments, and then we just talk,” Carpenter says of her songwriting process. “At some point, a song is made in 12 hours—sometimes in less, like three hours.” This time, she tailored her lyrics for her guests. “I wanna be in Vogue,” she crooned as a guitar player strums along.

Carpenter then switched gears and got glam for a drive-in movie premiere for her new film, Clouds, a movie about Zach Sobiech, a singer-songwriter who died in 2013. Carpenter plays Sammy Brown, Sobiech’s best friend. For the event, stylist Jason Bolden dressed her in a black sequin Balmain dress and sky-high Jimmy Choo heels. She sported the eveningwear look (and a mask) as she met up with costars and watched the film while socially distancing. “This is the new 2020 way of watching movies you’re in, but this is very exciting for me, because I haven’t left the house in eight years,” she says. She then ended the long day with the ultimate late-night snack: some pizza.
