“Discover Seneca Village” in Central Park
A special activation near Central Park’s West 85th Street entrance will teach visitors about Seneca Village, the predominantly African American community that was formed near there in 1825; two years before slavery was abolished in New York and decades before the park was built.
Conservancy staff will be on site in Seneca Village from 10:00am to 2:00pm on June 19 and 20. Those interested in a guided tour can register for one here.
A Juneteenth Celebration at Alice Austen House
On a stage fashioned from the plywood that covered storefronts during last summer’s racial protests, a group of BIPOC and LGBTQ poets and musicians will give a performance at Staten Island’s Alice Austen House Museum on Saturday afternoon. Produced by NY PopsUp, the event includes appearances by the likes of Pamela Sneed and andriniki mattis.

“Brooklyn Resists” from the Brooklyn Public Library
Curated by historian Dr. Brian Purnell, an outdoor exhibition will pay tribute to political and social activism in Brooklyn, as illustrated by a wealth of archival and contemporary imagery. Purnell, New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, and the Brooklyn Public Library’s president and C.E.O. Linda Johnson will be in attendance on Saturday to deliver opening remarks.

Begin Again: Jason Moran with Total Freedom and students from The Urban Assembly School for the Performing Arts
On Astor Place this weekend, New York students and Ashland Mines—known to many as the DJ Total Freedom—will join jazz musician Jason Moran as he “sonically ushers in the possibility of freedom” with a free-ranging practice-slash-rehearsal-slash-performance on Rashid Johnson’s Red Stage.
